The Problem

The Former Footballers Initiative had no unified digital presence to connect its members, publish news and events, manage player profiles, or collect membership applications. Community engagement happened through informal channels, making outreach, welfare appeals, and event coordination slow and fragmented.

Our Solution

Truthy Systems built a production-grade web platform — formerfootballersinitiative.org — that centralises everything FFI does online: a public site with player profiles, news, events, gallery, and welfare appeals, paired with a full admin panel for content management, newsletter dispatch, analytics, and membership processing.

About this product

The Former Footballers Initiative (FFI) website (formerfootballersinitiative.org) is a comprehensive, production-grade web platform built by Truthy Systems to serve Uganda's community of retired footballers, fans, and administrators.

FFI was established in 2015 to bridge the gap left by Uganda's football culture: a sport played from the 1940s with national heroes who often had no institutional support after retirement. The platform brings the organisation's full mandate; skills development, financial literacy, community support, and career transition — into a single digital home.

The public-facing site features a cinematic hero with GSAP parallax animations, a filterable player directory with TikTok-style swipe navigation, rich news articles with automated newsletter dispatch, event listings with live countdown timers and in-browser registration, a community memory archive, and a welfare appeals module for player support campaigns.

Behind the scenes, a 15-module admin panel gives FFI staff full control over all content: publishing news (with one-click OG image watermarking), managing events and registrations, composing and dispatching batched newsletters via Resend and Google Pub/Sub, moderating gallery submissions, reviewing membership applications, tracking analytics across views and shares, and monitoring SEO health.

Built on Next.js, and Firebase the platform is architected for long-term maintainability, offline resilience, and low operational cost; giving FFI a professional digital infrastructure comparable to established sports organisations across the continent.

Key Features

  • Player & Fan Profiles — searchable directory with filterable grid, TikTok-style swipe view, spotlight hero, and individual profile pages with SEO metadata
  • News & Articles — rich-text CMS with image uploads, featured article pinning, automated OG-image watermarking via Cloud Functions, and slug-based SEO URLs
  • Events Management — full event lifecycle (create → publish → register), per-event registration tables, countdown timers, sponsor display, and 'Add to Calendar' support
  • Automated Newsletter — Firebase Cloud Functions dispatch batched newsletters to subscribers via Resend, triggered by new article/event publishes or admin compose
  • Immersive Photo & Video Gallery — filterable gallery with Motion animations, lightbox, inline video, and Storage integration
  • Welfare & Donation Appeals — public appeal cards with donation totals, admin-managed contribution records with donor photos
  • Full Admin Panel — 15+ content management modules (news, events, members, gallery, sponsors, programs, newsletter, analytics, SEO health, quiz, appeals, users)
  • Analytics System — sharded counters aggregated, with a dashboard showing views, shares, top content, and date-range filtering
  • Community Programs — program listings with in-app application forms and admin review queue
  • Memory Vault — community-submitted football memory archive with admin moderation
  • FFI Wrapped — year-in-review interactive experience

Results & Outcomes

After launch, FFI replaced all informal outreach channels with a single professional platform. Player profiles, news articles, and events can be published in minutes rather than days. Newsletter dispatch — previously done manually per email — is now automated and batched at scale. Membership applications, welfare appeals, and event registrations are captured directly in Firestore with full admin visibility. The organisation now has a credible, SEO-optimised digital presence that reflects the legacy of Ugandan football
